Grandmas are GREAT!

Grandma's will leave a lasting legacy, whether they know it now or not. Just ask Jordan Coburn, who wrote this award winning Essay in his Third Grade Class:

My Grandmas
By Jordan Coburn

At the end of last year, I lost both of my grandmas; Grandma Esther and Grandma Eula. My grandmas were a big part of my life. I spent a lot of time with both of them. Those were good times.

My Grandma Esther lived up north, near Napa. She loved to play cards and bingo, and always put puzzles together. Grandma Esther used to buy puzzles just for me, but soon I worked on her puzzles with her. She was always so nice, funny, and polite. We always went to Denny’s for breakfast because Grandma loved Denny’s. Grandma had big hair. She got her hair done at the beauty shop every Friday so she would look good. This always made her look happy.

Grandma Esther had emphysema for a long time because she smoked all her life. Then she got lung cancer. It was hard to watch her try to breathe. She had to be on oxygen all the time, even when she was asleep. We had to take her oxygen tank with us to Denny’s. I was with her the day she died. The whole family was there. My sister, Khristian, and brother, Josh, played guitar and sang songs for her. My mom said it was a good way to die, with love all around.

My Grandma Eula lived with us. She loved to talk about the olden days. She also liked to make graphic art for the family. I liked to cook for Grandma. She loved when I served her meals to her. She appreciated everything and was always grateful for everything. She even appreciated my brother, Josh’s drumming! Grandma would take me to karate class when my mom couldn’t. Sometimes we’d go to Kmart together and she would buy Yu-Gi-Oh cards and Lego’s for me. She loved to spoil me. I can still hear her laughing. She had a beautiful smile, and snow white hair.

Grandma Eula died of a heart attack. We didn’t know she was sick, so we were really surprised. The ambulance came to our house at 4:30 in the morning when I was asleep, and took her to the hospital. She died that night at 8:20. It was so fast. I didn’t get to tell her goodbye or that I loved her. She was in a coma when she died. I don’t think she knew she died. I wonder if she knows it now?

I miss my grandmas. I miss their stories, their smiles, and their hugs. I don’t get to see them anymore, or laugh with them, or tell them jokes. I didn’t realize how lucky I was to have such wonderful grandmas, and now they’re gone and I am sad.
